Waka Christian Center and Rushing Wind Emmaus  …the story of the humble beginnings.

When Rushing Wind Emmaus became a community in 1997, the steering committee began searching for a place to sponsor the Walk to Emmaus weekends, and the former Waka School building was vacant.  Perryton ISD assumed they owned the property.  But upon examination of the deed, it was discovered that if or when the building ceased to function as a school, the property and acreage would revert back to the family who originally donated the land.  There was only one survivor of the original family found in Illinois.  He sold the property to the newly organized Waka Christian Center for $1.00.

The work began! The building had been unoccupied for nine years and many of the fixtures had been removed.  Ten men signed a loan for $100,000.00 believing this was God’s plan.  Through the directions and perseverance of the WCC Board of Directors, members of Rushing Wind Emmaus community, many contributors, and other volunteers, the building was on its way to being restored.

The deed was received in early 1998; it was March 1999 before the RW Emmaus Walk #5 was held in WCC.   While the Center was being renovated, the first three walks were held in the First United Methodist Church in Perryton, and Walk #4 was in the New Beginnings Retreat Center near Dumas, Texas.  The RW Board has been very generous in assisting with needs of the facilities.

Waka Christian Center became a reality and a home for Rushing Wind Emmaus, as well as a retreat center to serve the area for family reunions, church retreats and community meetings.  It is the responsibility of the WCC Board of Directors to oversee the facilities, all donations, changes and repairs to the facility.   Rushing Wind Emmaus Board of Directors, a member of the Upper Room Walk to Emmaus International, sponsors the local Walk to Emmaus weekends according to the international by-laws.  In the spring of 2014, Rushing Wind Emmaus sponsored the 100th Walk to Emmaus weekend!

The WCC bi-laws state that there will be no names displayed that would take the glory away from the Lord.  These pictures are here only to remind us of how God blessed the Waka Christian Center and continues to do so.
